09. Funders

9.1 Does the organization receive core funding from the government or other sources?
9.2 What are the dollar amounts of these funds and what proportion of the organization’s income do they comprise?

Many nonprofits receive governmental funds or other core funding from organizations including the U.S. government.  Part VIII Statement of Revenue on Form 990 lists government grants and other contributions. ProPublica Nonprofit Explorer provides access to Form 990s as well as summary information for nonprofit organizations. Also check the New York Charities Bureau. In New Mexico, search the NM DOJ Registry of Charitable Organizations for filing documents and registration statements. State attorneys general often regulate charity operations within their states.

Tax exemption applications (such as 1023 forms) can be obtained from the IRS through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, or can be demanded by email from the organization itself.
