The National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE) is a classification system of nonprofits developed by the National Center for Charitable Statistics, which will help you to define the core areas of activity. The NCCS also provides a table of all NTEE codes.

Item 1 of Section 1 of Form 990 provides a summary of “…the organizations mission or most significant activities.”

Part III of the 990 provides additional information.  On Line 2 the filer is asked if they made any significant program changes since filing their last 990. If so they are required to fill out Schedule O. Based on Line 3 they must report similar information on operations that ceased.   In Section 4 they must provide detailed information on the three largest program services.

Candidthe National Center for Charitable Statistics (NCCS), and the Economic Research Institute all provide access to Form 990 as well as summary information on nonprofit organizations. Also check the New York Charities Bureau.

The organization’s web site will likely provide additional information on their services and activities.
